Nintendo released its financial results for the first quarter of its fiscal year ending March 31, 2014 today. And it reveals dismal sales for Wii U.
From April 1 to June 30, Wii U sold 160,000 units, less than half of the 390,000 it sold during the first quarter of 2013. Wii U software only moved 1,030,000 units. Lifetime hardware sales are now 3,610,000, and software sales 14,440,000.
On a positive note, sales of 3DS hardware and software increased on a global basis by 12 and 10 percent, respectively, over Nintendo’s last reported quarter. And on a lifetime basis, sales of Wii hardware and 3DS software have both exceeded 100 million units worldwide. Digital content revenue generation also increased by nearly 150 percent over the same period last year.
Nintendo also saw a return to positive results in both ordinary and net incomes, and operating losses less than half versus the same period last year. See below for details.
